Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Fire Alarm Division, Yellowknife Branch, you will be mainly responsible for inspection, verification, modification and service of fire alarm systems. You will also respond to service calls from customers.

Fire Prevention Services is a multi-discipline fire protection systems service provider doing installation, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair to all types of systems from sprinklers, fire alarms, special chemical suppression systems, and extinguishers; throughout Alberta and the Canadian North with branches in Leduc AB and Yellowknife NT. This broad range of activities provides significant opportunity for challenging work, travel, and professional development in the fire protection industry.

We are seeking an individual with the qualifications set out herein; but we are also will to train individuals with relevant background and aptitude.

Among other things, your responsibilities will be:

Regular Duties
  • Prepare quotes
  • Observe Company Safety Rules and complete daily JHA Forms
  • Perform work following O.H. and S. Acts and Regulations
  • Complete work in a professional and timely manner
  • Participate in the development of JHA’s and Safe Work Practices relevant to the position
  • Maintenance and operation of Fire Alarm systems and components
  • Perform inspection, verification, service and troubleshooting of existing fire alarm systems
  • Perform software upgrades, repairs or improvements to systems following inspections
  • Perform inspections and testing of Fire Detection/Suppression Systems as per ULC, NFPA standards and manufactures equipment listing guidelines
  • Preparation of inspection, verification and deficiencies reports in a timely manner
  • Emergency Lighting and Fire Extinguisher inspections, maintenance and testing
  • Perform all work in a professional and timely manner
  • Communication skills (includes answering phones and dealing with customers)
  • Attention to detail
  • On-call after hour’s rotation
  • Travel out of town when required to complete job assignments
  • Other duties as assigned
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  •   Inspection and testing of other fire protection systems: Fire Suppression systems; Kitchen, Industrial Suppression Systems, Mobile vehicle and equipment suppression systems, Clean Agent, extinguishers and sprinklers
  • Assembly and programming of new fire alarm systems
  • Assist other divisions as directed

 Required Qualifications

  • Five (5) or more years of relevant experience in service and inspection of fire alarm systems or CFAA Certified plus minimum 1-2 years experience
  • Strong fundamentals in electronics/electricity or Fire Science Technology
  • Aptitude for mechanical and electrical/electronic troubleshooting
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of the Canadian Fire Codes and of all aspects of the Canadian Building Codes as they apply to Fire protection and life saving equipment
  • Ability to work well independently
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • Willing and able to travel
  • Knowledge of Notifier and Mircom products an asset
  • Annual fire extinguisher inspection & certification
  • REQUIRED: Valid Driver’s License w/o encumbrances that would negatively impact the company’s insurance
  • REQUIRED: Clean drug test
  • REQUIRED: Clean criminal records check
  • REQUIRED: Medical with x-ray
  • REQUIRED: Cell phone
Additional Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have experience or certification in the following areas:

  • NWT Certified Electrician or Red Seal Electrician
  • Desirable to have experience in the installation, and/or ITM of specialty Fire Suppression Systems
  • First Aid
  • Grade 12 or GED
 Special Certifications

These are considered an asset but not required:

  • WHMIS
  • Dangerous goods
  • Installation, and/or ITM of specialty Fire Suppression Systems
  • Verification certificate from manufacture`s
